Ancient Very Metal-poor Stars Associated with the Galactic Disk in the H3 Survey

چکیده

Ancient, very metal-poor stars offer a window into the earliest epochs of galaxy formation and assembly. We combine data from H3 Spectroscopic Survey Gaia to measure metallicities, abundances $\alpha$ elements, stellar ages, orbital properties sample 482 (VMP; [Fe/H]$<-2$) in order constrain their origins. This is confined $1\lesssim |Z| \lesssim3$ kpc Galactic plane. find that >70% VMP near disk are on prograde orbits this fraction increases toward lower metallicities. result unexpected if predominantly accreted many small systems with no preferred orientation, as such scenario would imply mostly isotropic distribution. Furthermore, we there some evidence for higher fractions amongst [$\alpha$/Fe]. Isochrone-based ages main sequence turn-off reveal these uniformly old ($\approx12$ Gyr) irrespective abundance metallicity, suggesting population was not born same well-mixed gas disk. speculate has heterogeneous origin, including both in-situ ancient accretion satellite direction rotation at early times. Our precisely measured show Galaxy had relatively quiescent merging history over most cosmic time, implies angular momentum alignment been place least 12 Gyr.

Mining the Galactic Halo for Very Metal-Poor Stars

We study the age and metallicity distribution function (MDF) of metal-poor stars in the Milky Way halo as a function of galactocentric radius by combining N-body simulations and semi-analytical methods. We find that the oldest stars populate the innermost region, while extremely metal-poor stars are more concentrated within r < 60 kpc. We predict that the MDF of [Fe/H]≤ −2 stars varies only ver...

Lithium in very metal poor thick disk stars

A search for lithium is performed on seven metal poor dwarfs with metallicities ranging from [Fe/H]=-1.5 down to [Fe/H]=-3.0 but showing disk–like kinematics. These stars belong to the metal poor tail of the Galactic thick disk and they may be also the result of an accretion event (Beers and Sommer-Larsen 1995). The Li 6707.8 Å line is present in all the seven dwarfs. The weighted average of th...

Galactic Cosmochronometry from Radioactive Elements in the Spectra of Very Old Metal-poor Stars

In a short review of neutron-capture elemental abundances in Galactic halo stars, emphasis is placed on the use of these elements to estimate the age of the Galactic halo. Two prominent characteristics of neutron-capture elements in halo stars are their large star-to-star scatter in the overall abundance level with respect to lighter elements, and the dominance of r-process abundance patterns a...

New Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Galactic Halo

We present a detailed abundance analysis based on high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra of eight extremely metal poor (EMP) stars with [Fe/H] . −3.5 dex, four of which are new. Only stars with 4900 < Teff < 5650 K are included. Two stars of the eight are outliers in each of several abundance ratios. The most metal poor star in this sample, HE1424−0241, has [Fe/H] ∼ −4 dex and is thus...

Sulphur abundance in very metal-poor stars

We have obtained high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectra of the S i nearinfrared doublet at 8694 Å in eight metal-poor stars with metallicities in the range −0.6 ≤[Fe/H]≤ −3.0. Elemental sulphur abundances were derived for six targets and upper limits were set for two of the most metal-poor stars in the sample. The sulphur doublet at 8694.62 Å has been detected in three stars (HD19445, HD2...
